Skylark - Hiding Places, encaustic

Skylark - Hiding Places, encaustic

The carved space in this reclaimed barn wood block makes home or a window for a skylark in flight. The songbird sings its song while rising towards the heights.

The painting consists of layers of pigmented beeswax (encaustic) and is finished with a line drawing and stain for a beautiful patina. The block measures 7.5"x 7.5" x3" deep, can hang on the wall or rest on a shelf. The barn wood block is beautiful from any angle and the natural element gives it a wonderful presence.

Please note that the barn wood used for the artwork is weathered wood with cracks and imperfections, nail marks, sometimes embedded nails and it is meant to be used as is. All the imperfections are not a defect but add to the rustic beauty of the artwork.

The surface is textured, slightly translucent - a beautiful quality of encaustic painting - the translucency permits visibility of underlayers giving the artwork a beautiful depth and dimension.
An incised line drawing is done in the beeswax as a last step with a ebony stain revealing the lines for a beautiful patina and sharp contrast with the softness of the beeswax.

The sides are finished in black, ready to hang, no framing required.

The surface of paintings is softly textured, and the translucency of the pigmented beeswax (encaustic) gives the artwork a wonderful depth. The line drawing incised in the wax creates a beautiful contrast with the softness of the wax and on each piece there is a touch of silver leaf.

Dark Field

Dark Field

The Dark Field, an original encaustic painting (painting with pigmented beeswax) on 1" cradled wood panel. The artwork measures 12"x12".
The painting consists of layers of pigmented and non pigmented beeswax (encaustic), with an added fine line drawing in the beeswax and finished with ebony stain.
The minimalistic landscape draws it's energy from the black and white contrast and the contrast between the softness of the beeswax and the sharp, energetic line drawing on it's surface.

Jacob's fight with the Angel

Jacob's fight with the Angel

From mymixed media series, a combination of photography, drawing and encaustic on multiple paneled surface.
The amazing qualities of the encaustic (beeswax) give a new dimension to the image. The artwork consists of 9 cradled wood panels- one 8"x8", four 6"x6" and and five 4"x4". The overall installation measures around 22"x 24".
The image is pieced together, not all the parts are revealed, giving it the wonderful feel of a reconstructed image, rediscovered. Also the organization of the multiple panels gives the artworks a wonderful dynamism in spite of the very static, almost frozen image.
Starting with a photograph, I mount it on wooden panels and paint on top of it with layers of pigmented beeswax, obtaining a slightly textured surface. The artwork is finished with fine line drawings on top of the beeswax painting and a layer of ebony stain.
